Child marriage remains one of the biggest barriers to girls’ education. Many girls are forced to leave school early to take on household responsibilities, which often brings their formal education to an end. In sub-Saharan Africa, marrying at age 17 lowers the chances of completing school by 4.6%, while marrying at age 12 or younger reduces it by more than 12%.

Even when girls want to return to school, they face significant obstacles such as domestic duties, early motherhood, and restrictive social norms. These challenges often trap them in a cycle of poverty, limiting their opportunities for personal growth, economic independence, and a better future.

Beyond education, child marriage exposes girls to serious health risks, including complications from early pregnancies, as well as emotional and psychological harm. It denies them the chance to develop, to dream, and to make choices about their own lives.

At FIDA Ghana, we stand for the protection and promotion of the rights of women and children in Ghana. We advocate for legal and social reforms, provide legal aid to vulnerable girls, and raise awareness about the harmful effects of practices like child marriage. FIDA Ghana works tirelessly to empower girls to stay in school, access justice, and enjoy their fundamental rights.

Ending child marriage is not just about protecting girls—it is about building stronger families, healthier communities, and a more equitable society. Governments, communities, and individuals all have a role to play by promoting education, enforcing laws, and challenging harmful cultural practices.

Every girl deserves the right to learn, to grow, and to decide her own future.
